Spotlight Series Overview

Many of the GSE blog series have great content about how GSE solutions can help people across dozens of industries collect, move, and manage the data intelligence of their business. Cattle Ear Tag Retention

A Solution for Fernando

Fernando operates a cattle ranch of approximately 2,000 head in the Chaco region of Paraguay. His responsibilities include making sure he provides traceability data to the OIE (world organization for animal health) and reducing loss in his herd. He needs a tracker that will stay on the animals while remaining cost effective and efficient.


Fernando’s Problem

Ranch operations in the Chaco region of Paraguay present a great place to raise cattle, but with the terrain, ear tag retention can be a problem. The region's plentiful grasslands are populated with many trees and shrubs, and the palm copernicia alba and espina corona trees litter the landscape, and can wreak havoc on ear tags. The most common failure is the plastic tearing, allowing for the tag to eventually fail and fall off. As a cattle producer working to maintain the regulations that have made Paraguay a growing global producer, Fernando must keep tags in the ears and deliver traceability and data to the OIE.

Fernando chose the GSatRancher for his animals, mostly because of the price point and reliability of the device, but also in large part due to the retention rates seen in product testing. The tag is made of a custom medical-grade material that is safe for direct contact with hides, incredibly durable, and weather tested for extreme temperatures. The material also has significantly more flexibility than its more rigid counterparts in the industry, allowing it to get caught and give a little, mitigating risk of sudden yanking that results in many other tags coming off or hurting the animal's ear.

Fernando's Missing Piece

Thanks to the retention rate of GSatRancher ear tags, Fernando can be confident that his animals are tracked no matter where they graze throughout the Chaco region. He is able to quickly locate and move his cattle to maintain health and effective grazing, and in the end, deliver accurate data to the OIE, helping to make sure that Paraguay maintains and strengthens its global brand as a premium cattle producer.
